TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION ADVISORY
These installations require a specific level of skill; attempting this on your own without professional assistance may lead to safety hazards and unforeseen expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions detailed here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following scenarios exemplify various difficulties I have encountered during installations, which may reflect your own experiences and offer valuable solutions.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE PROBLEM OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the necessary size for the gate and any extensions required. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you intend to cut out and insert it into the modified part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will be clearer once you have the gate in your possession.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are prepared for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are finalised and the gate has been thoroughly tested for stability.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTSIDE
Although installing baby gates outdoors can be a quick and cost-effective solution, it may void the warranty of these gates.

I strongly recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be viewed as only a temporary and economical solution. This could risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not intended for outdoor applications due to the potential exposure to harsh weather elements.
- This limitation is clearly outlined in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failing to comply with warranty requirements will lead to the loss of warranty protection.
For a durable solution, consider engaging a contractor specialising in security or latch gates. Although this may involve higher costs, it is the most effective route.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures can ensure complete rust protection; however, they are aimed at extending the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular maintenance every 1-2 months can greatly reduce the likelihood of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture build-up, adhere to these recommendations:
-
- Prior to installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover all surface areas, especially at the base.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will facilitate water drainage and prevent rust from developing inside the hollow gate, where moisture can accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. These holes will promote airflow to prevent moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
